Over the mountains to a film-set kasbah

Aït Ben Haddou is the earthen kasbah you've seen without knowing it — Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia and Game of Thrones all filmed here. This UNESCO-listed ksar of packed-red towers rises above a river on the old caravan route to the Sahara, and the drive to reach it, over the 2,260 m Tizi n'Tichka pass, is half the spectacle.

Be honest with yourself about the day: it's roughly 3.5 to 4 hours of driving each way, so it's long. But if history and dramatic landscapes are what you came for, it delivers like nothing else near Marrakech — the mountain pass, the kasbah itself, and Ouarzazate's Atlas Studios and Kasbah Taourirt. We start early to make it comfortable.

Good to know

Before you go

How long is the drive to Aït Ben Haddou?
Roughly 3.5 to 4 hours each way over the Tizi n'Tichka mountain pass, so it's a long day of around 11–12 hours. We start early and build in stops to break up the driving.
Is it worth it despite the long drive?
If you love history, dramatic scenery or film locations, yes — the pass and the kasbah are genuinely spectacular. If a long car day would spoil it for you, a closer trip like Agafay or Ourika may suit you better.
Can I do it as an overnight instead?
Yes — many people prefer to continue to the desert overnight rather than turn back. That's a multi-day route run by our sister brand, To Discover Morocco, and we're happy to point you there.
Which films were shot at Aït Ben Haddou?
Scenes from Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, Game of Thrones and others were filmed at the ksar and around Ouarzazate, which is why the area is nicknamed 'Ouallywood'.
