Aït Ben Haddou is the earthen kasbah you've seen without knowing it — Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia and Game of Thrones all filmed here. This UNESCO-listed ksar of packed-red towers rises above a river on the old caravan route to the Sahara, and the drive to reach it, over the 2,260 m Tizi n'Tichka pass, is half the spectacle.
Be honest with yourself about the day: it's roughly 3.5 to 4 hours of driving each way, so it's long. But if history and dramatic landscapes are what you came for, it delivers like nothing else near Marrakech — the mountain pass, the kasbah itself, and Ouarzazate's Atlas Studios and Kasbah Taourirt. We start early to make it comfortable.

Continue to Ouarzazate for the Atlas film studios and Kasbah Taourirt (visits optional).
Return over the mountains
The long, scenic drive back to Marrakech, arriving in the evening.
