Cool mountain air, an hour from the medina

When Marrakech gets hot, locals head for the Ourika Valley. Just an hour south into the High Atlas foothills, the temperature drops, the Ourika river runs alongside the road, and Berber villages cling to green terraces on the slopes. It's the easiest way to swap the city's heat and bustle for waterfalls and fresh air, and back in time for dinner.

The valley climbs to Setti Fatma, where a moderate walk leads up to a series of seven waterfalls. Along the way you'll stop at a Berber home for mint tea, see how argan oil is made, and have lunch at a table set right beside the river. It's relaxed, scenic and genuinely refreshing — our most popular full-day trip for first-timers.

Good to know

Before you go

How hard is the waterfall hike?
The walk to the first of the seven waterfalls is moderate and takes around 30–40 minutes over rocky ground; continuing to the higher falls is steeper. You choose how far to go, and trainers or walking shoes are recommended.
Is Ourika a good trip in summer?
Yes — it's one of the best hot-weather escapes from Marrakech because the valley is noticeably cooler and shaded, with the river running through it.
How is it different from the Imlil trip?
Ourika is about waterfalls, villages and a riverside valley at an easy pace. The Atlas & Imlil trip goes higher into the mountains with more serious walking and Toubkal views. Ourika suits families; Imlil suits keen walkers.
Is lunch included?
Lunch isn't included so you can choose your own spot, but we stop at a riverside restaurant where you pay directly — usually very reasonable.
