Imlil sits at around 1,740 metres, the last village before Mount Toubkal — at 4,167 m the highest peak in North Africa. This is the trip for anyone who wants to actually walk in the mountains rather than just look at them: terraced Berber villages, walnut and cherry groves, mule tracks and big, clean air, all reachable in a day from Marrakech.
From Imlil a local mountain guide leads you on a walk through the valley to a Berber village, with the option of a short mule ride and lunch at a house or guesthouse with a view down the valley. It's moderate rather than technical — no climbing gear — but it's a proper walk, so come with trainers or boots and a layer for the altitude.
Drive south out of Marrakech and climb toward Asni and the High Atlas.
Reach the trailhead village at around 1,740 m, gateway to the Toubkal massif.
A local guide leads you on a moderate walk through walnut groves to a Berber village — mule option available.
Traditional lunch at a Berber house or guesthouse, looking out over the valley.
Descend from the mountains and drive back, arriving late afternoon.
Imlil is the only day trip from Marrakech that puts you genuinely inside the High Atlas, not just looking at it from a viewpoint. As the gateway village to Mount Toubkal, it offers a real guided mountain walk through Berber villages and walnut groves — the trip for travellers who want the mountains to be the main event, not a backdrop.
