It's the first question almost every Marrakech visitor asks: can I see the desert, and do I have to drive all the way to the Sahara? The short answer is that you have two very different options — and the right one depends entirely on how much time you have.
Short on time or want an easy evening? Agafay — 40 minutes away, half a day, sunset and a camel ride. Is the desert the whole reason you came, and you have 2–3 days? The Sahara (Merzouga) for the real dunes and a night under the stars.

The Agafay Desert
Agafay is a stone desert of pale, rolling hills about 40 minutes south of Marrakech — close enough to reach in an afternoon and be back for dinner. It gives you the core of a desert evening: a camel ride across the ridges, mint tea at a Berber camp, and a spectacular sunset with the Atlas Mountains behind. The one thing to know is that it's rocky, not sandy — if you arrive expecting towering golden dunes you'll be disappointed, but go in expecting a lunar landscape and it's magic.
Choose Agafay if: you have a short trip, you want a low-effort evening, you're travelling with kids, or you just want the atmosphere of the desert without a long journey.
The Sahara (Merzouga & Erg Chebbi)
This is the real thing — the towering sand dunes of Erg Chebbi, a camel trek into the sea of sand, a night in a desert camp and some of the clearest star skies you'll ever see. The catch is distance: Merzouga is 8–10 hours from Marrakech, so it simply cannot be done as a day trip. You need a minimum of two days, and three is far more comfortable, usually looping through Aït Ben Haddou and the Dades or Todra gorges on the way.
Choose the Sahara if: the desert is the highlight of your whole trip, you want genuine dunes and a night under the stars, and you can spare two or three days.
The verdict
For most people on a typical 3–5 night Marrakech trip, Agafay is the answer — it delivers a real desert evening without eating your whole holiday. But if you've come to Morocco specifically for the Sahara, don't settle for Agafay as a substitute; commit the two or three days and do Merzouga properly. They're different experiences, not better-or-worse versions of the same one.
