Ourika Valley vs Imlil: Which Atlas Day Trip?

Both take you into the High Atlas within about an hour of Marrakech — but they're built for different people. One is about waterfalls, villages and a riverside lunch; the other is about actually walking in the mountains. Here's how to choose.

Short answer

Want waterfalls, cool air and an easy day with the family? Ourika Valley. Want a proper mountain walk with Toubkal on the horizon? Imlil.

Ourika Valley

The Ourika is the classic easy escape from the Marrakech heat — an hour south, following a river up into green terraces and Berber villages, ending at Setti Fatma where a moderate walk climbs past seven waterfalls. You stop for mint tea and argan, and lunch at a table set right beside the river. It's relaxed, scenic and very family-friendly; the waterfall walk is as gentle or as far as you want to make it.

Choose Ourika if: you want cool air and greenery, you're with family, or you'd rather have a relaxed day with a short walk than a serious hike.

Imlil & the High Atlas

Imlil sits higher and deeper in the mountains, at around 1,740 m — the last village before Mount Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak. This is the trip for people who want to walk: a local guide leads you through walnut groves and Berber hamlets, with a mule option and lunch at a house looking down the valley. It's moderate rather than technical — no gear needed — but it's a proper walk, so come in trainers or boots.

Choose Imlil if: walking is the point, you want bigger mountain scenery, and a relaxed valley stroll wouldn't be enough for you.

The verdict

Same price, similar drive — so it really comes down to appetite for walking. Families, first-timers and anyone after an easy, pretty day should take Ourika. Active travellers who'd feel short-changed by a gentle valley should go to Imlil and get into the real mountains. If you have the days for both, do Ourika earlier in your trip and Imlil once you've found your feet.
