Marrakech rewards people who plan a little. The city is small enough to feel in a few days, but dense — a maze of a medina, a desert and a mountain range on the doorstep, and an evening culture all its own. This is our honest take on what's genuinely worth your time, roughly in the order most people enjoy them, with a note on what to skip.
In this guide
01Get lost in the medina
The old walled city is the reason most people come, and the best first thing to do is simply walk it — the souks, the tanneries, Ben Youssef Madrasa, the hidden riads and the chaos of Jemaa el-Fnaa at dusk. It's wonderful and genuinely disorienting, which is why a guided walk on your first morning pays for itself: a local gets you oriented, past the touts, and into the corners you'd never find alone. After that, you can wander with confidence.

Skip the "official guides" who approach you in the square; they work on commission from shops they steer you toward.
02Take a cooking class
If you do one hands-on thing in Marrakech, make it this. You shop the spice market, cook a full Moroccan meal in a riad — a starter, a tagine or couscous, a dessert — and then eat it. Travellers name it their trip highlight more than almost anything else, because you leave with a skill rather than just photos. Vegetarian and vegan work fine.

03See the Chez Ali Fantasia
Marrakech's classic big night out, running since 1980: a Moroccan feast in grand Berber tents in the Palmeraie, followed by a Fantasia — costumed horsemen charging and firing muskets, acrobats, a flying carpet and fireworks. It's unashamedly theatrical and touristic, and that's the fun of it. Families and first-timers love it. Set your expectations on the spectacle, not the cuisine — the food is generous and traditional rather than gourmet.

04Watch sunset in the Agafay desert
You don't need to drive ten hours to the Sahara for a desert evening. The Agafay, a rolling stone desert 40 minutes from the city, delivers a camel ride, mint tea and a sunset over the Atlas — the easiest desert fix in Morocco. Just know it's rocky hills, not sand dunes; go in expecting a lunar landscape and you'll love it.
05Take a day trip out of the city
Two or three days in, most people want to get out of the heat and the crowds — and Marrakech is the best base in Morocco for it. Within a day you can reach the Ourika Valley's waterfalls, the Atlantic port of Essaouira, the tallest falls in the country at Ouzoud, or the High Atlas at Imlil. Our rule of thumb: pair one close half-day with one or two full-days, and keep a day free for the medina.
- Ourika Valley — waterfalls and cool mountain air, an hour away
- Essaouira — breezy Atlantic coast and a walled medina
- Ouzoud — Morocco's tallest waterfalls, and wild monkeys
- Atlas & Imlil — a real mountain walk for keen hikers

06Fly over it at sunrise
A hot air balloon at dawn over the palm groves and plains, with the Atlas turning gold, is a genuine bucket-list morning — and you land to a traditional Moroccan breakfast. It's an early start and the priciest single experience here, but few regret it. Book a couple of days ahead in spring and autumn, when it sells out.
07Reset in a hammam
After days of walking the medina, the traditional steam-and-scrub hammam is the perfect reset — black soap, a proper exfoliation, and an argan-oil massage. There's everything from simple neighbourhood hammams to luxury spa versions; pick the level that suits you and go in the late afternoon.
Putting it together
A comfortable four to five nights lets you do all of the above without rushing: the medina and a cooking class in your first days, Chez Ali one evening, Agafay for a sunset, one or two day trips, and a hammam to finish.
